The project

Malls are displacing street commerce and the culturally rich heritage of Istanbul’s bazaars.

The Modern Dome is an open-air, multi-level market that blends the two: streets as cultural icons, malls as the modern shopping complex.

It offers a sitting arena, pop-up bazaar, pop-up art gallery, shelter and utility booths, runs off-grid and is built from modular, prefabricated sheets and C-channel. The slope on both sides of the bazaar mingles with the site’s context. It is designed to foster dialogue and transparency, and to support active community interaction.

The design was one of the top shortlisted entries in the competition.
